Math

In Math this week, students learned about two types of diagrams. One is the Change diagram, which shows an amount before and after it changes (either more or less). Students also learned about Parts and Total diagrams, which show how 2 or 3 groups of things (parts) make up a larger number of items (total). Students also played the Addition Spinner game to practice mental math skills.

Language Arts

This week, students again enjoyed the opportunity to read aloud books to the class. They did more creative writing this week, and wrote stories about silly pictures on the board. They also used Spelling List 7 for their Word Work activities.

Science

Students again practiced the Scientific Method by conducting another scientific investigation. This time salt was used to determine how long ice will melt. They recorded the process on their investigation sheets.

Social Studies

This week, we read stories about what to do if you see a student being bullied. This also related to our character trait of the month, which is respect.

This being my first week back, much of our time in class was spent getting me up to speed on what the students had been working on with their substitute teachers over the course of October. In Math, we worked on practice problems, and exploring function tables. We also had our Math assessment on Friday. In Social Studies, we worked on posters for the character trait of the month, respect. In Science we picked up where we left off with the things a scientist does. In Language Arts, we spent most of our time getting back into our Daily 5 routine.

Math

This week in Math, students reviewed concepts from the Math assessment. We worked a lot with patterns in number grids, and using them to count number patterns (counting by 2s, 10s, etc.).

Language Arts

With Read to Someone in full swing, this week students learned about how to read with a partner in two different ways: reading the same book together, or alternating reading different books to each other. Students learned how this improves their listening skills as well as their “reading muscles.”

Science

Students learned more about the skills that scientists use – namely, observe, predict, classify, and compare and contrast. They also completed a classification activity so they could use and see these skills in action.

Social Studies

Students primarily continued to collect examples of integrity on their worksheets and logs – it was great to see how many examples came from each other!

Math

Students practiced counting on a number grid, and finding and defining patterns in them. We also reviewed the math assessment from last week, which will go home for review next week.

Language Arts

We spent a lot of time this week practicing Read to Someone and discussing its importance. We learned how reading with a partner is not only fun, but it helps us improve our fluency and independence as well!

Science

In Science, students learned about what it means to be a scientist, and what it is that scientists do. What does a scientist look like? What to they do? Why are scientists and science important? These are all questions that students discussed and answered in class!

Social Studies

This week, we worked on our September character trait, which is Integrity. Students looked for examples of integrity in their story books and among their classmates.

Math

This week in Math, students explored the concept of greater than and less than. We also looked at different “names”, i.e. variations, of a given number. Students completed sorting activities with dominoes and number cards, and also completed their assessment of Unit 1.

Language Arts

It was an exciting week for Language Arts! In celebration of Reading Month, students from the Middle/High School came and read in small groups with the Grade 2 students. Additionally, this week we launched our Read to Someone portion of the Daily 5 framework, where students learn to read cooperatively.

Social Studies

Students were introduced to our character trait of the month, integrity. We watched a few short video examples of integrity, and learned to identify integrity in a variety of situations.

Science

We have begun our unit on The Nature of Science. Students have begun to explore what “science” means and what it is that scientists do.

Language Arts

This week, we launched the first portion of our Daily 5 routine, Read to Self. Read to Self is a silent reading activity that students do on their own. We talked about the importance and purpose of Read to Self, and also how to choose a good fit book. We also discussed reading stamina, which will become a bigger focus next week during our Reading Week!

Math

We focused on place value and counting by tens in a variety of different ways. Students practiced using American money and learning about exchanging different amounts of money that are the same value. We also explored number patterns found on number grids, and how to use grids in counting methods.

Science

Students learned about the significance of asking questions in scientific inquiry, and discussed videos where questions were posed and then tested through experimentation.

Social Studies

This week, we discussed classroom protocol for homework routines and responsibility. We also explored growth mindset discussed on the Class Dojo website. Students were also assigned classroom jobs, which will rotate weekly throughout the class.

Firstly, I’d like to thank all the parents who were able to come to our Open House on Thursday, August 18! It was wonderful to meet you and to discuss the upcoming year in Grade 2. As always, please don’t hesitate to email or come in if you have any questions or concerns.

The past week’s overview:

Math

Last week, students reviewed Everyday Mathematics routines and games from last year, and that we will continue to use this year. We worked with recognition of American coins and using them to practice addition facts. We also reviewed analog clocks, calendars, and simple addition. The students especially enjoyed Addition Top-It, a card game in which students use addition to beat their opponent.

Language Arts

This week was about working on routines and behaviors that students will need in our literacy program, The Daily 5. The Daily 5 relies heavily on specific sets of routines and procedures, such as the correct way to clean up an activity area, and how to listen for directions. All of this will allow students to work effectively and independently. During this time, students practiced these behaviors during fun activities such as puzzles and drawing. Because most students did The Daily 5 last year, they had no problem practicing these routines, and I’m confident that they are ready to begin the first step of The Daily 5 this upcoming week! We also read Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing and Frog and Toad Are Friends, which were also a hit 🙂

Social Studies

The students enjoyed several community-building activities we did this past week, including a classmate Bingo game, where they had to collect the names of students on a Bingo Board. They also interviewed each other and created profiles of their partners.

Science

In Science this past week, we spent some time watching science videos about animals and ecosystem, at the request of students when asked what they wanted to learn more about. We will begin our Science study more in depth in the coming weeks, but for the moment we will focus more on students’ curiosity and turning it into actual inquiry.

The first week of Grade 2 was a great success! This past week, students learned a lot about the school, their classes, and the expectations in Grade 2. Much of our time was spent playing get-to-know-you games, reading stories, and getting into the classroom routine. Students made paper cutouts of themselves that featured pictures of their hobbies, families, and where they live.  We read quite a few stories together as a class. Hop on Pop and Fly Guy Presents: Sharks were two favorites.

This upcoming week we will begin our math journals and activities, and prepare for starting our Daily 5 literacy program in the coming weeks.
