Tessellating Birds

WEEK 21 DATE: February 7, 2014

Pre/ Kindergarten: Mosaic Heart Card

In getting ready for Valentine’s Day, we will be working on making a card that will use mosaic patterns.

 

First Grade/Second Grade:  3D Valentine Mobile

This week we will be constructing a Valentine mobile using string and paper.  Students will be able to make messages on the hearts that all will be able to see.

 

Third Grade/Fourth Grade: Valentine’s Day Cards

 Students will be learning about  Valentine’s Day this week.  We will be constructing cards to be given to a special valentine person.

 

Fifth Grade: Tessellating Birds

Students will be studying the works of M.C. Escher and creating a tessellating composition.  The work will involve creating a stencil and making a repeating pattern.  Once the pattern is created, the students will paint the birds tones or complementary colors.   

 

 

 

WEEK 20 DATE: January 20, 2014

Pre-Kindergarten/ Kindergarten: In preparation for the Tet holiday, we will be making flower arrangements with tissue and paint.

 

First Grade/Second Grade:  We will be exploring the Cubist movement of the early 20th century.  Building off of last week’s Shape Animals, students will be using geometric shapes to create portraits of their partners. 

 

Third Grade/Fourth Grade: Leading up to International Week, we will be making Mexican Sombreros out of construction paper and paint.

 

Fifth Grade: M.C. Escher’s Tessellating Birds: Students will be studying the works of M.C. Escher and creating a tessellating composition.  The work will involve creating a stencil and making a repeating pattern.  Once the pattern is created, the students will paint the birds tones or complementary colors.

DATE: January 13, 2014

 

Pre-Kindergarten/ Kindergarten:  Happy New Year and welcome back! We will be getting ready for the Tet/ Chinese New Year with some traditional Chinese projects.  We will start with making some bamboo brush paintings and finish off the end of the week with making some lucky red envelopes.

 

 

First/ Second Grade: Happy New Year!  We will be finishing up our Year of the Horse drawings and then begin work on making some observational drawings using just shapes. 

 

Third/Fourth Grade- Happy New Year!  We will be finishing our Coat of Arms project from last week and for International Week, we will be creating an adobe village drawing using pastels. 

 

Fifth Grade- In conjunction with Ms. Sara’s class for International Week, we will be creating an African Savana.  On Monday we will be painting trees and Friday we’ll be creating cardboard animals.
