Week 15 Lesson Overview

Pre- Kindergarten/ Kindergarten:

Chalk Pastel Christmas tree and wreath

We will be starting December with some holiday crafts.  Our students will be using pastels to create a Christmas tree and wreath.  We will discuss some of the different kinds of decorations and traditions of this festive season.

 

First/ Second Grade: Cut-Out Snowflakes

This group will begin by cutting out some paper snowflakes.  They will learn various techniques to create different patterns.  This is a very old tradition dating back generations, much like Origami in Japan.

 

Third/ Fourth Grade:  

Peace Windows in the style of Chagall’s stained glass windows

We will be continuing the exploration of stain glass windows from last week.  Students have finalized their designs and have begun cutting out their pictures.  They will finish with putting in colored paper to emulate the stain glass.

Fifth Grade: 3 Point Perspective

Fifth Grade will be honing their drawing perspective skills.  The student s will design and draft a 3D building, drawing upon skills perfected during the Renaissance.  A slide presentation will cover the evolution of perspective in western art.  We will also explore the ways that perspective drawings are used in today’s architecture and modeling for movies and video games.

WEEK 14 Lesson Overviews

Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten:

Printed People

We will be exploring printing techniques using foam board on paper.  The students will create gestural figures by dipping their template in black paint.  They will finish the piece by adding to it with felt-tipped marker.

 

First/Second Grade

Painting Perspectives

Students this week will be learning how to use paint to create the illusion of distance and space.  We will be creating a mountain range using watercolor that will be diluted as the they recede into the distance.

Third/ Fourth Grade

Peace Windows in the style of Chagall’s stained glass windows

This week we will be covering the latter works of Russian Painter Marc Chagall and his stain glass paintings he created towards the end of his life.  The students will see an array of various stain glass windows through the ages and the techniques used to create them.

 

Fifth Grade

Still Life

Fifth grade will be introduced to one of the oldest genres of classical art; The Still-Life.  Students will watch a short slide presentation of various Still-Life pieces from the Renaissance to present day.  Students will watch a demonstration of various techniques involved in capturing an object.  They will then have their chance at rendering the flowers using their observation skills.

 

WEEK 13: Lesson Overview November 18-22, 2013

 

 

Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten::

Blow Painted Trees

We will be experimenting with different media this week.  Using straws, we will create blow-painted trees.  This technique will be very challenging for most students and should yield interesting results.

 

First/ Second Grade

Illuminated Initials

This week we will be looking into the past at Illuminated manuscripts.  We will look at ancient books before the printing press.  After viewing a slide show of various kinds of calligraphy, the students will create their own illuminated initial.

 

Third/ Fourth Grade

Draw a Story

We will be using our imaginations to create a storyboard.  The students will create a 3 panel story and will leave the spaces next to the stories blank.  After the students have finished they will exchange with another student  and they will write their interpretation of the story.

 

Fifth Grade

Compass Drawings

This week’s class will involve mathematics and color theory.  Students will use compasses to create various spirals they will be coloring using primary colors.  At the various intersections, they will be required to use secondary colors.

Pre-Kindergarten/ Kindergarten

Newspaper Castle

This week we will be continuing our exploration of structures around us.  Students will see the various types of castles from the past and then will use cut and paste methods to construct their own castle.

 

First Grade/Second Grade

Rooster Drawing

We will be exploring some of the local animals of this area.  Students will be walked through a step-by-step process of making a rooster after which they will color their bird.

 

 

Third Grade/Fourth Grade

Draw a Story

Fifth Grade

Milky Way Galaxy

In conjunction with Ms. Sara’s class, the Fifth Grade will be making a replica of the Milky Way Galaxy using glitter and glue.  The students will see a short documentary on the different sorts of star clusters and the arms of the spiraling universe that we are a part of.

Water Reflection Pastel Resist Painting

This week we will be exploring cityscapes and how they react with water reflections. Students will be using oil pastels and watercolor to recreate a mirror image of buildings in a body of water.

First/ Second Grade
Scratch board

The students will be creating their own scratchboards this week. Scratchboards require a layer of crayon/ pastels as a base over which a layer of black acrylic paint is applied. After this, students can create their own images using a probe tool to scratch out their own original images.
Second Grade

Third/Fourth Grade
Tessellating Birds

We will be exploring the geometric works of ancient Islam and M.C. Escher. Students will be creating a bird template which will be a recurring pattern they will trace. Once the pattern is created, the students will be coloring them in a checkered pattern.

Fifth Grade
Shoe Drawing

We will be further exploring observational drawings with our shoes this week. Students should be sure to bring a pair of interesting sneakers or trainers to school that will be challenging for the student and visually engaging for the viewer.
